Collingwood Drive Extension

Civil

Ipswich’s largest single road construction project in 2015, the $6.5M Collingwood Drive Extension provided a much needed connection and intersection upgrade between the two major hubs of Collingwood Park and Redbank Plains.

OVERVIEW

Epoca partnered with Ipswich City Council to construct Collingwood Drive Stage 2 which involved the upgrade under traffic of two lanes in each direction on Redbank Plains Rd and
a single lane in each direction on Collingwood Drive. The new road was designed to reduce travelling times between Ipswich and Collingwood Park by opening up a second entrance to the Collingwood Park area.

PROJECT SCOPE

Located in the busy Ipswich growth corridor, project management required effective traffic, safety (working near exposed live services), and erosion and sediment controls.
The nature and location of the works also required effective community liaison/consultation.

The roadworks scope included:

  • Construction of 1km of new two lane road.
  • Traffic signals.
  • Water main construction.
  • Upgrade of existing two lane road to create four lanes – constructing an extra lane in each direction.

The works include bulk earthworks, excavation, stormwater
installation and controls, civil electrical infrastructure, traffic
signal installation, communications installation, trunk water main installation and pavements.
The project also included considerable streetscaping and other associated works such as concrete footpaths, islands and kerbs, signage and linemarking.

KEY CHALLENGES AND ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Working in proximity to gas and oil lines and other underground services.
  • Acceleration of programme to enable Christmas period use.
  • Community Liaison and effective Traffic Management Control.
