Brisbane City Council committed to a rolling program of works aimed at improving bus stop accessibility. The Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program (BSAIP) will ensure that by 2022, BCC’s s bus stop network (some 4,800 sites) will comply with the relevant legislative instruments.

OVERVIEW

To comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), the bus stop infrastructure upgrades are designed to meet the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (DSAPT) and Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards 2010 (Premises Standards).

Over a period of 9 months, Epoca completed 6 infrastructure upgrade packages, working in live traffic conditions on 628 bus stop sites.

PROJECT SCOPE

Infrastructure improvements involved upgrades to boarding points, access paths, waiting areas, signs, tactile ground surface indicators and bus stop seats.
Typical minor works included J pole and signage relocation, timetable realignment, installation of new seats and placement of tactile ground surface indicators.
More complex structural upgrade works included bus shelter installation and/or relocation, kerb and footpath replacement/ extension/realignment, boarding slab replacement, and relocation/installation of street furniture.

Works were undertaken in live traffic conditions with permit approvals, materials delivery, commuter safety, environmental controls and community liaison all key management considerations. Operational risks such as traffic management (safe pedestrian and vehicular passage, work activity separation, temporary bus stop relocations and nightworks) and excavation around existing underground services were managed by undertaking a detailed risk analysis of each bus stop.
